Which Heart Rhythm Service Do You Actually Need?
Heart rhythm symptoms can be confusing. A skipped beat may be harmless, but a persistent racing or irregular heartbeat may need further checks.
In most non-emergency cases, the journey starts with your GP. They can ask about your symptoms, check your pulse, arrange an ECG, and request blood tests to look for possible contributors such as thyroid changes, anaemia, or kidney issues.
When A Specialist Clinic May Be Needed
If symptoms suggest a new or ongoing arrhythmia, you may be referred to a cardiology service or a Rapid Access Arrhythmia Clinic. These clinics are often designed to assess palpitations, suspected Atrial Fibrillation, or unexplained rhythm symptoms more quickly than a routine appointment.
Some services may offer ECG monitoring, echocardiography, or specialist review as part of the same pathway.
When Electrophysiology Comes In
Electrophysiology, often shortened to EP, is a specialist area of cardiology focused on the heart’s electrical system. People may be referred to EP services if they have complex arrhythmias or may benefit from procedures such as catheter ablation, pacemaker fitting, or implantable defibrillator treatment.
Other Useful Support
Community pharmacy pulse checks where available
Anticoagulation clinics for some blood thinner monitoring
Cardiac rehabilitation after selected procedures or cardiac events
Patient support groups for education and shared experience
Heart rhythm services are not all the same. The right route depends on your symptoms, test results, and whether you need monitoring, medication, or specialist treatment.
If symptoms are severe, sudden, or worsening, call 999 immediately.
