How Do You Know If An Irregular Heartbeat Is Normal Or Dangerous?

It is common to notice the occasional skipped beat, thump, or flutter in the chest. In many healthy people, these sensations are harmless and short-lived.

They are often caused by ectopic beats, where the heart fires an early electrical signal. This can feel like the heart has missed a beat, followed by a stronger thump.

Palpitations can also happen when the nervous system is stimulated by stress, caffeine, anxiety, dehydration, alcohol, nicotine, tiredness, or hormonal changes.

When It May Be More Than A Palpitation

An irregular heartbeat becomes more concerning when it affects how well the heart pumps blood. This may happen with clinical arrhythmias such as Atrial Fibrillation or Ventricular Tachycardia.

Warning signs include:

  • Palpitations that last for several minutes or longer

  • A pulse that feels completely irregular

  • Breathlessness

  • Dizziness or fainting

  • Chest pain

  • Feeling weak or unusually tired after the episode

A Simple Pulse Check

A harmless ectopic beat may feel like a steady rhythm with one early or missed beat. A more concerning rhythm may feel chaotic, uneven, or impossible to count.

Most brief flutters are not dangerous, but the pattern matters. If symptoms are persistent, unexplained, or linked with feeling unwell, it is sensible to seek medical advice.

If symptoms are severe, sudden, or worsening, call 999 immediately.
