How Can You Tell SVT Apart From Atrial Fibrillation?

A sudden racing heartbeat can feel frightening, especially if it starts while you are resting. Both Supraventricular Tachycardia, or SVT, and Atrial Fibrillation, or AF, can cause palpitations, breathlessness, dizziness, and anxiety.

The key difference is the rhythm.

SVT is usually very fast but regular. It often feels like a rapid, steady drumbeat. AF is usually irregular and chaotic, with no clear pattern.

Why SVT Feels Sudden

SVT often happens because an electrical signal gets caught in a loop in the upper part of the heart. This can make the heart jump suddenly from a normal rhythm into a very fast rhythm.

It may also stop just as suddenly.

Why AF Is Treated Differently

AF is different because the upper chambers of the heart quiver rather than squeeze properly. This can allow blood to pool, which increases the risk of clots and stroke.

Most forms of SVT do not carry the same stroke risk.

Common Triggers

  • Caffeine or stimulants

  • Alcohol

  • Emotional stress

  • Anxiety

  • Tiredness

  • Sudden exertion

  • Nicotine

  • Some decongestants

What To Track

  • Was the rhythm regular or irregular?

  • Did it start instantly or gradually?

  • How long did it last?

  • Did it stop suddenly?

  • Did you feel faint, breathless, dizzy, or have chest pain?

SVT and AF can feel similar, but their rhythm patterns and risks are different. Noticing how an episode starts, feels, and stops can help guide the right medical assessment.

If symptoms are severe, sudden, or worsening, call 999 immediately.
