Can Asthma, COPD And Arrhythmia Affect Each Other?

The heart and lungs are closely connected. The lungs bring oxygen into the body, and the heart pumps that oxygen-rich blood to the tissues. When one system is under strain, the other often feels it.

This is why managing an arrhythmia alongside asthma or COPD can be more complicated than managing either condition alone.

Some reliever inhalers can make the heartbeat feel faster or more forceful. At the same time, some heart rhythm medicines may need caution in people with asthma or airway narrowing.

Why Reliever Inhalers Can Cause Palpitations

Reliever inhalers are designed to open the airways. In some people, especially with frequent or high use, they can also make the heart feel faster, shakier, or more noticeable.

This does not mean you should stop using an inhaler prescribed for breathing symptoms. It does mean frequent reliever use should be discussed with a GP, asthma nurse, respiratory clinician, or pharmacist.

Why Oxygen Levels Matter

Low oxygen levels can place extra strain on the heart. During a lung flare-up, chest infection, or sleep apnoea episode, the heart may respond by beating faster.

This can make palpitations more likely in some people.

Symptoms To Track

  • Wheezing or chest tightness

  • Sudden palpitations

  • Breathlessness at rest

  • Dizziness or faintness

  • Palpitations after inhaler use

  • Worsening cough, phlegm, or infection symptoms

Heart and lung symptoms can overlap, which is why guessing the cause is difficult. Keeping a simple record of symptoms, inhaler use, and triggers can help clinicians make safer decisions.

If symptoms are severe, sudden, or worsening, call 999 immediately.
