Why Heart Rhythm Changes Often Happen At Night

Many people notice changes in their heart rhythm when they are lying in bed. This can include a stronger awareness of the heartbeat, irregular patterns, or brief episodes of racing.

While this is sometimes due to increased awareness in a quiet environment, there are also physiological reasons behind it.

During sleep, the body shifts into a resting state. The heart rate slows, and the nervous system becomes more dominant in regulating internal functions. This slower rhythm can make irregular beats more noticeable and, in some cases, more likely to occur.

Sleep stages also influence heart behaviour. Deep sleep tends to slow the heart, while other stages can introduce sudden changes in rate and rhythm.

In addition, factors such as disrupted breathing, stress, or late-night habits can contribute to these changes.

Understanding this helps explain why nighttime symptoms are so common.
