Is It Anxiety Or An Arrhythmia? Understanding The Difference

A racing or pounding heart can be one of the most unsettling sensations a person experiences. It often raises an immediate question. Is this anxiety, or something wrong with the heart?

The challenge lies in the overlap. Both anxiety and arrhythmias can produce very similar physical symptoms, including a fast heart rate, chest discomfort, and breathlessness.

During anxiety or panic, the body activates its fight or flight response. This releases adrenaline, which causes the heart to beat faster and more forcefully. The rhythm is usually steady, even if rapid.

In contrast, a clinical arrhythmia often feels irregular or chaotic. It may start suddenly and stop just as quickly.

Other clues can help. Anxiety episodes often build over a few minutes and may include shaking, tingling, or a sense of impending panic. Arrhythmias are more likely to occur without an emotional trigger and may be associated with dizziness or faintness.

Understanding these patterns helps reduce uncertainty.

However, if symptoms are new, severe, or changing, a medical review is always the safest step.
