How Can Parents Help Children Talk About Missing Expensive School Trips?

School trips often create excitement in classrooms. But for some families, the cost makes participation difficult.

When a child realises they cannot go, the disappointment can feel very personal.

Parents may feel pressure to explain quickly, yet children often need space to express their emotions first.

Helping Your Child Share Their Sadness

A helpful starting point is gentle curiosity.

Questions such as:

• “Would you like to tell me how you feel about it?”
• “What part of the trip were you most looking forward to?”
• “Is there something that makes it feel especially difficult?”

These questions invite honesty rather than shutting the feeling down.

Once children feel heard, they usually become more open to understanding the situation.

Sometimes the most supportive response is simply listening.

How do you help your child talk about disappointment without feeling ashamed?
