Why Do Some Children Withdraw When We Mention Cyberbullying?
Even raising the topic can cause tension.
Why?
Because children often associate adult involvement with loss of autonomy.
They may worry that:
- You will misunderstand the social dynamics.
- You will escalate publicly.
- You will remove online access entirely.
Create A Non-Threatening Entry Point
Talk about online behaviour generally, not only when you suspect a problem.
Discuss:
- Kindness in digital spaces
- How group chats can shift tone
- The difference between teasing and harm
Reassure Them Of Partnership
Say clearly:
“If something happens, we will handle it together.”
“I will not act without talking to you first.”
Safety grows when control is shared.
Does your child see digital conversations with you as safe ground?
