ADHD Accommodation Without An IEP In UK Schools

Many parents assume an IEP is required for ADHD support at school, but this is not the case in the UK. Children can receive ADHD accommodation without an IEP through reasonable adjustments under the Equality Act 2010.

If ADHD significantly impacts a child’s daily functioning, schools are required to adapt teaching approaches and learning environments to support access to education.

Legal Rights And School Responsibilities

Reasonable adjustments are not optional. Schools must remove barriers that disadvantage pupils with ADHD, regardless of whether an IEP or EHCP is in place.

Types of ADHD Support Without An IEP

  • Short movement breaks to support regulation
  • Visual timetables and reminders
  • Adjusted seating arrangements
  • Clear instructions and structured routines

Advocating For Your Child

Parents can request support through the SENCO at any stage. Early intervention often reduces academic stress and behavioural challenges.

Guidance is available through ADHD Certify. Because ADHD and autism can overlap in school presentation, further understanding may be supported through Autism Detect.
