How Do Different Countries Determine Ramadan Dates, and Why Do They Differ?

Ramadan dates vary across countries because the Islamic calendar depends on the moon, and how that moon is observed can differ.

Some countries rely strictly on physical moon sightings within their borders. Others accept sightings from elsewhere, and some use calculated visibility to confirm the start of the month. Geography, weather, and scholarly interpretation all play a role.

For many adults, especially parents, this can feel inconvenient in a world built around fixed calendars. Yet this variation also offers a valuable lesson. Faith is not uniform in practice, even when belief is shared.

Wise Compass often encourages parents to approach these differences as opportunities to discuss respect, patience, and understanding at home.

Parents who like to reinforce values through reading may turn to Juniors’ Adventures for younger children and Young Explorers for older ones, using stories to explore faith and diversity together.

Ramadan begins differently across the world, but its essence remains the same.

What has your experience been with differing Ramadan start dates?
