Do Autism Traits Come More from the Mother or Father?

Autism has a strong genetic basis, and traits can be inherited from either parent. Some studies show that mothers may pass on certain autism-related genes found on the X chromosome. Fathers can also contribute risk factors through inherited variants or new mutations.

Autism expression varies between children, even in the same family. Environmental influences, prenatal care, and individual development all shape how traits appear.

Early screening can support families when autism runs in the family. Personalised guidance is available through Autism Detect. Some children also have overlapping ADHD traits, which can be explored through ADHD Certify.
