Birth Hypoxia and Autism Risk: What Parents Should Know

Birth hypoxia occurs when a baby does not receive enough oxygen during birth. For low-birth-weight infants, this increases vulnerability to neurodevelopmental challenges, including a higher risk of autism.

Hypoxia may interrupt the formation of key brain circuits, cause neuronal injury, and lead to white matter changes that affect communication between brain regions.

While not all infants exposed to hypoxia will develop autism, early developmental monitoring is recommended.

Families wanting guidance can explore personalised support through Autism Detect. Overlapping ADHD traits can also be explored through ADHD Certify.
